Before getting into the nitty gritty of the Coxswain 1, 2 and 3 courses we offer, we thought it would be beneficial for us to walk you through exactly what a Coxswain is, and what is expected of a Coxswain once you have completed one or more of our government accredited coxswain courses.
So, what is a Coxswain exactly? Well, we’re glad you asked! A Coxswain is a term primarily used in the maritime industry to refer to someone who is responsible for the safe operation and navigation of a vessel. The role of a coxswain is crucial in ensuring the well-being of both the crew and the vessel itself.
Coxswains are trained and experienced in operating various types of vessels, from small boats to larger ships. They are responsible for manoeuvring the vessel, ensuring it follows the intended course, and handling it in different weather and sea conditions.
Coxswains are skilled navigators who use a plethora of tools including charts, maps, and navigational instruments to determine the vessel’s position, plan routes, and avoid hazards such as rocks, reefs, and of course, other vessels. They also calculate courses and make course adjustments as needed.
Maritime safety is a top priority for coxswains. They are responsible for the safety of the crew and passengers on board the vessel. This includes implementing safety procedures, conducting safety drills, and responding to emergencies such as fires, collisions, or medical incidents.
Coxswains play a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining clear and efficient communication within the crew of the vessel. This is essential for ensuring that all crew members understand their roles, follow safety protocols, and coordinate their activities effectively.
Coxswains often conduct pre-voyage briefings to inform the crew about the day’s tasks, safety procedures, and any special instructions. These briefings ensure that everyone is on the same page and aware of their responsibilities.
Regular drills and exercises are essential for preparing the crew for emergencies. Coxswains lead these drills, instructing the crew on how to respond to various scenarios, such as man-overboard situations, fires, abandon-ship procedures, and more.
During operations, Coxswains assign specific tasks to crew members based on their skills and expertise. Effective communication is crucial in conveying these assignments clearly and ensuring that everyone knows what is expected of them.
In the open waters, Coxswains must communicate with other vessels to avoid collisions, navigate safely through busy waterways, and exchange relevant information. This communication is facilitated through various means including (but not limited to):
Very High Frequency (VHF) radios are commonly used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. Coxswains use VHF radios to broadcast their vessel's identity, location, intentions, and requests for navigation adjustments. They also monitor VHF channels for incoming messages and navigational warnings from other vessels or maritime authorities
In some situations, coxswains may use sound signals, such as horns or whistles, to communicate with nearby vessels, especially in areas of limited visibility or when maneuvering in close quarters
Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a system that automatically transmits and receives information about a vessel's identity, position, speed, and course. Coxswains use AIS to track the movements of nearby vessels and to broadcast their own vessel's data, enhancing situational awareness and collision avoidance
When entering or departing a port, coxswains may need to communicate with port authorities to request clearance, provide cargo manifests, and receive instructions regarding docking or anchoring procedures
In the event of an emergency or distress situation, coxswains contact shore-based search and rescue authorities to coordinate rescue efforts and request assistance. Accurate and timely communication is critical in such situations
Coxswains receive weather updates and navigational information from shore-based sources, which help them make informed decisions about voyage planning, route adjustments, and safety precautions
Coxswains must be knowledgeable about maritime regulations and laws specific to their region. They must ensure that their vessel complies with all relevant regulations, including equipment requirements, documentation, and safety standards. In many cases, coxswains are in a leadership position, especially on smaller vessels, and as such they are responsible for managing the crew, assigning duties, and ensuring that everyone works together efficiently.

Marine Engineering
Understanding the mechanics of vessels is crucial for a Coxswain. In this course, you'll gain an in-depth understanding of marine engineering. Explore topics such as engine maintenance, troubleshooting, and propulsion systems. Learn to diagnose and rectify common engine issues, ensuring your vessel's reliability and performance.
Vessel handling becomes more intricate at this stage. Refine your skills in handling vessels, including mastering complex manoeuvres, towing operations, and advanced anchoring techniques. Whether you're dealing with larger vessels or navigating tight spaces, you'll develop the finesse and expertise needed to navigate any situation.
As you progress in your maritime career, leadership becomes essential. This course equips you with the skills to lead and manage a crew effectively. Explore team dynamics, communication strategies, and conflict resolution techniques. Ensure the smooth operation of your vessel by fostering a cohesive and efficient crew environment.
The Coxswain 1 Course represents the pinnacle of Coxswain training, preparing you for advanced leadership roles within the maritime industry.
The Coxswain 1 Course serves as the foundational steppingstone for maritime enthusiasts and aspiring professionals alike. In this comprehensive coxswain 1 course, you will be trained in the following critical areas (see below).
The Coxswain grade 1 near coastal will allow you to command, and operate the engines of, a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 500 kilowatts:

Blended format i.e partly completed at home in your own time using an online training package and partly completed on our training vessels.
Once you have completed the online enrolment and paid the prescribed fee you will be able to register with a username and password that will provide the gateway to your online learning resources. These resources are available to you even after course completion for an unlimited time for your future reference.
The online training package has assignments and assessments where resources are provided. There may be some extra research required by you for which you can conduct using the Australian Boating Manual which is also provided to you free of charge upon enrolment.
Each unit also has a practical component, these components are conducted as part of the AMPA (AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment) requirements which will be covered throughout the course.
The total amount of practical days will be 4 days including AMPA. The AMSA application and finalisation and will be scheduled accordingly.

Candidates are required to undertake a final assessment conducted by an AMSA approved RTO approved assessor before being issued a certificate of competency. Candidates who successfully complete all requirements including the final assessment and have successfully submitted their application to AMSA via a participating post office will be provided with an interim Certificate of Competency.
The applicant must complete and provide the information required by the Application for a Certificate of Competency (AMSA form). Completing this form and providing the information required will help the applicant demonstrate he or she meets the eligibility criteria for the issue of the Certificate of Competency. The required documents supporting the application is provided to a participating AMSA post office who will submit to AMSA directly.

Applicants must meet the below criteria:
You also will be asked to provide an application for a certificate of competency, proof of identity and two passport-style photographs taken in the previous six months.
Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued;
Provide evidence of sea service accrual in the form of:
An application for a Qualifying Sea Service Assessment (AMSA form); or any of the following:
A declaration in a form acceptable to the National Regulator;
An approved sea service log book or task book;
A letter, from the operator, owner, master or chief engineer of a vessel detailing the applicant’s sea service
Certificate of Medical Fitness AMSA form
Eyesight Test Certificate Application (AMSA form);
Certificate 1 – Coxswain Grade 2 issued by an AMSA approved training organization;

A certified copy is a copy of an original document (not a copy of a copy) that has been certified as a true and correct copy by a person who is authorised to witness a statutory declaration (see list below).
Certified copies can be obtained by presenting the original document together with a photocopy of that document to an authorised person for them to sight and certify.

The Coxswain 3 Course is a domestic Certificate of Competency for operating in Australian waters. This certificate of competency lets you operate a vessel less than 12 metres for specified purposes in specified waters.

To be eligible for a Coxswain grade 3 near coastal certificate you must:
Be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date
Be able to speak and understand English, including written documents
Be medically fit for the duties, including eyesight
Gain any needed sea service
Complete any needed on-water practical tasks
Hold a recreational boat licence, issued by a State or Territory, or complete a training option listed under ‘new certificate’
